THE STORY OF THE BLACK BEE
Originally, one species of bee was able to live throughout Western Europe: the mellifera mellifera (the Black Bee) could adapt anywhere. For a long time, its production in France met the country’s honey needs. Beekeepers, in a quest for productivity, crossbred it with Italian and Slovenian bees. Gradually, a single standardised bee became dominant in global beekeeping: a variety that is indeed more productive, but requires much more unnatural care.
THE CONSERVATORY’S MISSIONS:
The Black Bee Conservatory – Sologne Orléanais is an association dedicated to the study and protection of the Black Bee.
- Collect the last remaining Black Bee colonies from local beekeepers
- Place the colonies into conservation
- Distribute these Black Bees to members and professionals
